Sayulita, Nayarit, Mexico – October 2015
We flew out from Vancouver to Puerto Vallarta for a short week of vacations earlier this month. It was a well deserved vacation for both a us and we didn’t want to go around too much. Travelling more, I’ve learned that the best way to get to know a new place and really understand the ‘vibe’ of the place is to stay for more than just a few days. That’s what we did in Sayulita!
We had booked an Airbnb studio, which turned out to be the perfect fit for us! We also were in the last week of the low season, at the end of the rain season, which helped us save quite a bit on expenses.
Sayulita is a surfer small town about one hour North of Puerto Vallarta. We were on a budget, so we jumped in one of the local bus from the airport to Sayulita. You have to cross the pedestrian bridge over the highway and the bus stop will be there. It was only 35 pesos (about 2US) for the entire one-way trip. These are regular local buses though, so if you have a lot of luggage it might not be the best option for you.
Within about 20-30 minutes you can walk around town and have seen most of the main part of the town. There is a lot of restaurants in Sayulita and they are worth discovering! We tried to eat at a different restaurant each time we went out for food (which would be twice a day for an entire week!). We’ve been told that during high season, there are some food festivals where in total, about 250 places are open in town to get some food! Pretty incredible. One of our best experience was at Burrito Revolution: we stopped for a quick tacos lunch and we ended up getting free samples of tequila with the owner and some special sauces and snacks on the side!
We spent a lot of time surfing (a bit every day almost) and we chose to go to the Lunazul surf shop and school. It was recommended to us by our Airbnb host, who knows most of the staff. We had a very good service – they are located beach front just in front of Don Pedro’s restaurant, right in front of the main surf break. Their prices are very reasonable (1h rental for 5$ US!) and they also offer group and private lessons. They have a few tables and chairs for guest down on the beach right in front of their rental location – we definitely used them most of the week too!
There are a few hiking paths to do around town if you are interested. I had to downsize the amount of hiking I wanted to do due to the weather – it was very very warm and I can’t handle so much heat during physical activity. We still went to explore a bit and walked around town and through the old Mexican cemetery towards la Playa de los Muertos. It is a very nice location for swimming and during high season they also have some stands were you can buy food. It took us about 30min to walk there from the main plaza in town.
We always felt quite safe in town and we really enjoyed our week in Mexico. We did a few additional excursions and activities that I will detail a bit more in my next few posts!
